Cycling Set-Up and Fitting
This unique service combines the knowledge and skill of physiotherapists and bicycle fitting specialists working together to ensure the most comfortable and biomechanically correct fit of each individual to their specific bicycle. Once correctly set-up, it will enhance your cycling performance (ie, power and efficiency) and reduce the risk of cycling-related injuries.
The bike fitting service offered below is aimed at all levels of athlete, from the beginner to the proferssional, with specific variations applied for both the road cyclist and the triathlete, as their mechanical demands and body positions are different when cycling.
If you have a history of cycling related injuries or you are taking your cycling seriously, then the comprehensive 'bike fit' and physiotherapy review is suggested. Please bring the following to the bike fit:
- bicycle
- cycling shoes (including orthoses if applicable)
- cycling shorts and jersey
1. Basic ‘Bike Fit’ (Cycling Video Analysis and Musculoskeletal Screening)
A brief musculoskeletal screening is performed to assess any individual issues that need to be accommodated in the bike fit, such as asymmetries in body alignment and inadequate flexibility. A variety of static measures of both the bike and the athlete are recorded, so as to optimize the ‘fit’ between the athlete and their bike.
A cycling video analysis is conducted to observe the current ‘fit’ of you and your bicycle in a variety of cycling positions. The fitting process is then conducted by combining the results of the screening, video analysis, bike geometry and the biomechanical findings (joint angles in various cycling positions) to provide your optimal riding position. Any additional bike parts will have an added cost.
and performance.
2. Comprehensive ‘Bike Fit’ & Physiotherapy Review
A comprehensive musculoskeletal screening involves the screening as per above but additionally assesses a person’s physical capabilities including their individual static posture, anatomical body alignment, dynamic joint mobility, flexibility and measures of lumbo-pelvic ‘core / trunk’ strength. A complete injury history is taken and this is correlated to their current bicycle set-up and the results of their individual physical screening. A series of specific corrective exercises is then provided to the athlete targeting their identified issues, such as inadequate flexibility and / or poor strength of the trunk / pelvis / legs.
Musculoskeletal Athlete Screenings
At Balmain Sports Physiotherapy we offer a wide variety of musculoskeletal screening assessments and programs for individual athletes and sporting teams. The aim of these screenings is to identify potential sources for injuries before they become a problem, teach techniques to ensure these identified problems are managed correctly and insure optimal physical performance and enjoyment for your chosen sport. Please contact our administration staff for more information or to make an appointment.
Cervical Pillow Assessments
A Cervical Pillow Assessment determines the best way to support your neck while you are sleeping , allowing you to sleep more comfortably and improve your function throughout the day. Following an examination of your body type, neck range of movement and joint mobility / stiffness, our physiotherapists will make recommendations regarding the referred pillow types for you, based on an extensive understanding of neck anatomy / pathology, sleeping postures and the very latest scientific evidence available, so as to provide optimal support for your neck while you are sleeping. We keep a selective range of reasonably priced cervical support pillows, allowing you to choose the one that feels the most comfortable for you. please note that there is no direct treatment involved.
Home Visit Physiotherapy
If you are unable to attend our practice rooms, then we also offer a mobile service for aged care and acute neural or fracture management physiotherapy in the convenience of your own home setting. Home visits offer families the undivided attention of a health professional away from a busy ward or clinic in the security and privacy of their own home. this provides the opportunity for less hurried discussions about practical issues the client or family may wish to discuss regarding their ongoing management. Please contact our administration staff for more information or to organise a convenient appointment time.

PODIATRY
Podiatry are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of lower limb biomechanical-related injuries in both the sporting and general population.
A referral from your general practitioner or physiotherapist is not required to see one of our podiatrists.
Podiatry Services Offered include:
The practice's Podiatrists are:
Sports Podiatry
Using the latest in biomechanical computer software, our podiatrists assess the alignment and function of your musculoskeletal system during gait (walking, running) and a series of functional exercises to identify the biomechanical factors involved and related to your injury.
These may include:
- Over or under pronation of the foot
- Pelvic Instability
- Excessive movement on a bone or soft tissue structure leading to increased stress
- One limb longer or shorter
With the repetitive nature of exercise and sport on the lower limb structures (bone, muscle, tendon, ligament), small inefficiencies or errors in your alignment and movement can lead to the development of overuse (ie shin splints, muscle tendonitis) injuries, which if left untreated can develop into stress fractures to the relevant bones involved.
In order to prevent your injury becoming more serious and debilitating, early intervention strategies are devised to stabilise and correct the biomechanical factors involved which may include:
- Muscle stretching
- Muscle strengthening exercises
- Customised and lightweight flexible orthotics
- Footwear advice (work, casual, running, sporting boots)
- Ankle strapping / foot padding and strapping ssive movement on a bone or soft tissue structure leading to increased stress
- One limb longer or shorter
General Podiatry
When walking the foot absorbs approximately 2 ½ times your body weight with each step. Naturally, the skin on the sole of your foot thickens and develops a hard protective layer on areas that are required to absorb the highest pressures. When the hard skin (callous) becomes too thick it can crack or create a burning pain under the foot. If the pressure becomes more localized and / or rubbing of the skin is also involved, a painful corn may develop. Treatment involves debriding (ie. remove the hardened upper layers of skin) the callouses / corns in a gentle and pain-free method, in order to allow the softer skin underneath to mature. Appropriate footwear advice would also be given to minimize the risk of re-occurrence.
Attention is often not paid to toenails unless they become bruised, thickened or ingrown, in which case they can be very painful, even at night in bed! Early intervention is imperative to manage the ingrown toenails effectively and avoid infection. There are many non-invasive treatment options avaiIable for ingrown toenails, however if they become an ongoing problem, nail surgery (performed under a local anesthetic) may be appropriate.
Please be advised that if you have diabetes, it is particularly important to have any corns / callouses and ingrown toenails treated regularly (every 6-8 weeks) by a podiatrist to avoid possible complications.
Other common foot conditions we successfully treat and manage are warts (verrucae), tinea (athlete’s foot) and blisters.

Pee-Lah-tees Background
The creator of Pilates, German born Joseph Pilates, suffered from various illnesses as a child, hence he developed his own specific exercises using springs on hospital beds to overcome his own physical weaknesses. The modern form of Pilates commenced in the dance community as it allowed them an alternative to land based training. Further popularity was achieved via rehabilitating injured professional athletes, but in recent times the wider population as seen its extensive benefits for health and fitness.
Core Stability - What is it and How Does it Relate to Pilates?
Pilates is widely recognised for its profound effect on improving core stability. Specific exercises focus on developing the endurance and strength of the core muscles, necessary for pain-free, efficient movement and maximal performance for all, from the office worker to the elite athlete.
Did you know that pain, injury or poor posture can cause the core stabilising muscles to switch off? These muscles do not switch on again by themselves - we must consciously turn them back on again. The latest scientific evidence reveals you are less likely to have a recurrence of back pain if rehabilitation involves exercises that activate and strengthen the deep stabilising muscles.
Pilates Improves the Way You Move
Pilates focuses on correcting muscle imbalances and improving faulty movement patterns. This is achieved through a series of precise exercises, often utilising specialist equipment (reformers, trapeze, barrels etc).
You could have strong global muscles but still have weak stabilising muscles. This imbalance can lead to chronically tight muscles, recurrence of injuries, poor postures and decreased peak performance. Pilates can address an underlying cause of pain, recurring injury or weakness by looking at the biomechanics of the body as a whole, rather than looking only locally at the joint involved.
Pilates Improves Muscle Strength, Flexibility and Toning
Spring loaded machines and specifically designed equipment supports your bodyweight and allows the body to relax. Specific exercises are then taught to provide either resistance (ie, muscle strength), or assist you into a greater muscle / fascial stretch (ie, muscle mobility and flexibility).
Pilates has also gained wide popularity amongst celebrities and models in their quest to keep on “looking good”. The secret lies in the whole body toning and conditioning that Pilates offers!

Sports massage can also be used in conjunction with training schedules and conditioning programs to enhance performance, aid in recovery from competition and reduce the risk of injuries occurring.
Deep Tissue Massage
Benefits: Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
The process of the Deep Tissue Massage aims to restructure the muscular system by re-positioning muscles, tendons and ligaments that may have become bunched and shortened. By realigning the body, habitual patterns of tension and stress accumulated by today’s lifestyle may be released. In addition to improved posture, other benefits include pain relief, increased energy and an improved sense of relaxation and well-being.
Pregnancy Massage

At Balmain Sports Physiotherapy we use the Belly Pillow, which is the ultimate pregnancy pillow, as it allows a pregnant woman to lie on her front, ease pressure on her back and lets her have a massage throughout her whole pregnancy! Massage can also be performed lying on her side with special pillows and bolsters.
Regular massage throughout the pregnancy is also said to shorten labour time and the return to optimal fitness after birth.
Swedish Massage
Benefits: Swedish massage can relieve fatigue, reduce tension, calm the nervous system and promote relaxation to give you a sense of renewed energy.
It can help maintain muscles in an optimum state of nutrition, flexibility and vitality whilst relieving muscle tightness and stiffness that may restrict full movement. Techniques used are flowing and rhythmic, and the pressure is suited to your individual preference or needs.
