Is your pillow giving you a pain in the neck?

How Can The Right Pillow Help My Neck Pain?

Technological advances in the workplace and the demand of longer ‘working hours’, whether at home or the office, have led to an increasing trend of sedentary work with increased time spent in sustained working postures.  It is not surprising then that neck pain, headaches and migraines are a common complaint.

We spend roughly one-third of our lives asleep and it is this time when our bodies need to be well supported to allow us to recover from the stresses of our normal daily activities. The correct spinal alignment during sleep or rest is important in order to unload our muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments and other structures. The correct pillow can effectively provide the optimal level of support for your neck, allowing you to sleep more comfortably and improve your function throughout the day.

Balmain Sports Physiotherapy has an experienced team of physiotherapists who are trained in spinal assessment and treatment. Our assessment protocols and recommendations are based on an extensive understanding of neck anatomy / pathology, sleeping postures and the very latest scientific research and evidence available.

What is a Cervical Pillow Assessment?

A Cervical Pillow Assessment allows us to determine the best pillow for you!!

In this assessment, we will discuss your needs and any history (current or past) of spinal injuries you may have had, as well as discuss your preferred method of sleeping (i.e. stomach, side, back). Following an examination of your body type, neck range of movement and joint mobility / stiffness, we will make recommendations to you about the best way to support your neck while you are sleeping. Please note that there is no direct treatment involved.

The cost of this assessment is an initial physiotherapy consultation ($75) in our Clinic. If you to choose to buy one of our pillows, they range from $59 to $79.

What Is The Right Pillow For Your Neck?

There are many things to consider when choosing a pillow. We all come in different shapes and sizes, some people have long necks while others have short necks, some with heavy heads while others have lighter heads.

The position you prefer to sleep in will help determine which pillow will suit you best. Some people sleep in only one position while others change position constantly throughout the night.

Everyone has different amounts of mobility in their neck which will require different types of support. People also have variations in the support of their mattresses and need to match this with the support they will require from their pillow.

With so many variations, it is important to get the right type of support for your neck and your particular sleeping patterns and habits. What pillow best suits someone may not best suit another.

Which Pillows Do We Sell At BSP?

As we are a sports physiotherapy practice, we are not a retail outlet. There are numerous types of pillows on the market varying in size, materials used, quality, cost and durability. We keep a selective range of reasonably priced cervical support pillows which we believe are the best available. The most expensive pillow does not mean it is the best!!

We will recommend a specific pillow for you based on your stature, neck requirements and positional preference. It is important to know that you are under no obligation to purchase any one of our pillows.

You will be able to trial the pillows we recommend in the practice, allowing you to select the one that feels the most comfortable for you.

Our pillows are made from high density foam, memory foam or a combination of the two.

Materials

Traditional Foam is the most supportive material used in our pillows and has the cheapest production cost. It is less comfortable but more supportive than memory foam.

Memory Foam is a very dense yet soft foam which softens with body heat. It is the most comfortable material to sleep on and provides moderate to firm support.
